What’s I’ve been eating lately: Gyro Aegean Grill

What’s up? My poor neglected food blog, I’ve found my way back to you. It’s hard to devote time to a food blog when you have so much else on your plate: A grinding full-time job, various errands and other creative endeavors.

Anyway, here’s what I’ve been up to lately in the gastronomy department.

Recently I revisited a restaurant I used to visit monthly, Gyro Aegean Grill. I haven’t written a review of this place because we tend to stick to the same dishes when we go, the gyro plate, called “The Largest and Best Gyro in Town” and the hummus. History repeated itself, of course!

Is it the largest and best gyro in town? I’m not sure. I think it’s the best the Young Adult Son and I have tried here, though we haven’t been intentional in scouting all the gyro places and doing a taste test. That would take more money than we have a notion of spending, though it does sound like fun! If the economy were kinder, maybe I’d organize such a taste test, blind judging each one, videoing the whole thing and putting it up on YouTube. Not such a bad idea.

The shopping center where Gyro is situated is undergoing renovation. The woods that used to surround the place have been torn down as part of construction to bring a Publix-anchored mill-themed shopping center to downtown.

So the area around the restaurant is looking bleak and ravaged in the meantime. I hate construction aesthetics, and there’s been so much of it around here. But anyway, Young Adult Son and I found ourselves at Gyro again. The waiter, the same one as always, noticed it’s been a while since we’ve been here. It was great to feel missed! She’s a sweetheart, and she does a pretty good job keeping us happy.

The ambiance includes images of Greece scenes that reminds Young Adult Son of Overwatch. It’s not too posh here, no cold modernity that you get with some places. It feels like a lived-in restaurant, not some freshly opened place that’s been bankrolled by private equity or some such nonsense.

Our hummus was pretty good, though always provocatively plated, with two olives on the peaks of two mounds of hummus. The plater knows exactly what they are doing with this, I suspect.

We always enjoy our “largest and best” gyro. Eventually we’ll need to try the rest of the menu!
